Examination of the records of the home, especially newspaper clippings, shows that for many years this orphanage has been hanging on by a thread.  It is entirely supported by indigenous contributions, mostly responses to newspaper reports of the struggles of this home.  It should be noted that all of the articles comment favorably on the health and happiness of the orphans in the home.
It is impossible to clearly convey the degree of poverty, filth and squalor of the neighborhood.  Neither words nor photographs can communicate the experience.  The only open space is the narrow shore of river, which doubles as a neighborhood latrine.  However, this neighborhood is not the worst in the community. This neighborhood is composed of masonry buildings improvised by squatters from largely recycled materials.  Nearby are slums composed only of low tents made of discarded tarpaulins, plastic sheeting and cardboard; population density is about one per square meter.  It is from these tent cities that the orphans are drawn.Despite the paucity of resources, this home manages to keep the children warm, dry, fed, clean, healthy and progressing well in school.
