Sunrise Happy Home - India
The children at this children’s home come from the surrounding tribal reserve where they lived in extreme poverty prior to coming to this facility. Many have lost parents due to leprosy, HIV/AIDS, malaria, and abandonment. Now they are happy to have a safe place to live and sleep, and good food to eat. FACILITY: The facility is located in a tribal reserve around 100 km from central Mumbai. The director of this facility also runs an English Primary School on adjacent property, and the children from this home attend the school. The facility, badly in need of many repairs, is in a large, walled compound in a rural area prone to flooding. It has a separate masonry storage building within the compound for food storage. This home is operating on a shoestring, yet despite the poverty of this children’s home, the director has managed to keep the children warm, dry, fed, clean and healthy through gifts in kind...but it is a very fragile situation that could go the wrong way any time. The children are also doing well in school. The director, Mala Naidu, was an orphan herself,
and somehow managed to raise herself out of poverty to get her Masters in Social Work.
